The lack of appreciation and recognition, lack of pride in their profession and work is a key barrier to the development of services e.g. in nursing, in hairdressing or retail. Recent research comes to the conclusion that these factors in industry are a major source for performance and innovation in business. That 'source' is under developed in the service sector.
